I like clothing with bright colors. What do you like to wear? Photo by Rachel Andrews

I’ve always been inspired by art in all genres, but fashion holds a special place in my heart. What I love about high fashion is that it’s functional art. People pay exorbitant sums of money to wear someone’s vision. Fashion is also very subjective. One person’s dream dress could be the picture of ‘ick’ for another. I used to dye my hair all the colors of the rainbow and wear just as outrageous clothing. When I really thought about why I chose to do that, the answer I came up with was surprisingly intuitive. I wanted people to get an idea of who I was before even speaking to me. I was expressing my inner self on my outer self.

I’m sure that makes sense to you, but take it a level deeper and think about the colors of the aura. In other planes of existence, where we only have energy to show others, no clothing or physical bodies, we see each other’s aura colors first. From those colors and patterns, we can start to understand who that person is before even uttering one word. This is our natural state, and whether we remember it or not, everyone has an intuitive knowing of this. We are chameleons because our aura changes color depending on our physical, mental, emotional, and other states, so we are in essence, always changing our energetic clothing.

My favorite color to dye my hair has always been green. People used to come up to me and say, “You know, I never like it when people have weird hair, but on you it looks so natural.” They were intuitively picking up on my aura being green around my head! I also got a lot of more impolite comments, but that was just part of the deal, I guess. But anyway, back to fashion…

I was in the supermarket today and I saw the new edition of Style.com/Print magazine. Here’s the cover:

Style.com/Print Cover Fall 2012
Style.com/Print Cover Fall 2012

In case you can’t read it, it says: Anxiety + Fantasy + Intuition = Fashion
And at the bottom, it says: Alber Elbaz, Every Time I use my instinct I win. Every time I think too much I lose.

He is an artist who understands his process and because fashion moves so fast, most designers understand the process. They live on the edge. They know that hesitation causes failures. If they miss their moment then they don’t have a show. If they fail to be inspired, they will have nothing to sell. They live and breathe through their intuition. And people buy what they make if it makes them feel connected.

We don’t all choose to express ourselves through clothing, nor do we have to. What fashion does is it gives us the option. We can play with different personas, we can express singular moods, or we can just play. I always tell my boyfriend that someday I’m going to get a sequin spraygun so I can be sparkling all the time. Sparkly is how I often feel, and it’s only natural to want to show others my insides.

Another thing we can take away from the cover’s equation is that it can be anxiety producing to put yourself out there. Fashion can be bold, and not everyone will think you look good. This can be scary if you’re wearing your true self on the outside. You may feel that it’s easier to look like everyone else. That’s true, but it can be much more fun to be intentional with your look. If there’s something you’ve always wanted to try wearing, whether it be an animal print skirt or a magenta scarf, try it out! If you get nervous about leaving the house in your new look, check in with your intuition. Ask yourself if what you are wearing affirms who you are. If it’s a yes, then go for it. If it’s a no, you can still wear it, but it may not give you the mood boost you are looking for.

Most of all, be playful with yourself. Fashion is meant to be another means of expression. You can look like anyone you want, but when you choose clothes and accessories that feel like you, the world will notice. Your outsides will match your insides and it will make a positive difference in your energy. People who feel harmonious are captivating. We are drawn into their energy. Fashion can help you achieve harmony, and who doesn’t want that?
